Project Overview

What is this for

Color Blind friendly sports gear.

I propose Identification Sleeves with a color combination of yellow and blue, which are easily identifiable by individuals with color vision deficiencies, making it easier for them to recognize teams.
Why

Individuals with Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) struggle to differentiate between opposing teams in soccer due to challenging colors. This affects spectators, players, coaches, referees, and staff.

To mitigate the challenges and frustrations experienced by individuals with CVD in enjoying global sports, thereby enhancing accessibility and promoting equity.
How & Process

I created a digital prototype using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to validate this concept visually. As the next step, I am planning to create a physical prototype by dyeing existing sports sleeve materials, with the hope of conducting user tests with individuals with Color Vision Deficiency

What is Color Vision Deficiency (CVD) ?

The technical term for color blindness is color vision deficiency (CVD).
It's usually an inherited condition caused by 'faulty' gene sequencing in the DNA of the X-chromosome.
However, it can also arise as a side effect of some diseases, such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis, as well as from certain drugs and medications.

︎
Who is affected?

300 million people

Worldwide, there are estimated to be about 300 million people with color blindness, almost the same number of people as the entire population of the USA.

Three million

In the UK there are almost three million color-blind people. Put another way, enough to fill the 90,000-seater Wembley Stadium more than 30 times.

5,500 people

Statistically, at least 5,500 people at a full Wembley Stadium will be color-blind. That's equivalent to the highlighted area in the picture.

How might colors appear to color blind people?

The color-blind simulation shows how most of the colors appear as murky greens.

Single-color kits cause the most problems.

To Be

To address this issue,

I propose Identification Sleeves to make it easier for people with color vision deficiencies to recognize teams.

︎
Why leg sleeve?

This identification sleeve doesn't require extra gear beyond the usual soccer equipment and uniform. Soccer players often wear leg sleeves during games, making it very affordable.

It's just a new approach to making the sleeve using different colors, similar to how socks are made.

This demonstrates remarkable adaptability, proving effective for both online streaming and live sports viewing engagements.
