Project Overview

What is this for

To manage dark data and encourage users to delete it.
Why

Dark data is an easily overlooked problem, referring to 'unused data' such as spam emails, unread messages, and unused old files stored in online-based drives.

This unused data causes higher energy consumption in data centers, resulting in simultaneous increases in electricity consumption.
How & Process

01. Integrating AR

Our team sees the main problem with this neglect as being 'invisibility', so we aim to visualize this amount of trash to help users understand and perceive how much unused data they have.

Dark Data



Dark data refers to information that is stored in online-based clouds, but is not actively used, consuming vast amounts of power and resulting in increased carbon emissions.
575,000 times

This is equivalent to the emissions produced by a car circumnavigating the Earth 575,000 times.
80 Countries

This is equivalent to the annual emissions of 50 individual countries.

Concept

The user's room transforms into a virtual representation of Earth, synchronizing with the user's dark data.
The user's current real-world location is depicted as Earth in augmented reality (AR), with dark data overlaid.

Failure to clean up one's dark data is equated with environmental damage to Earth itself.

This metaphor underscores the crucial need for action: deleting data that contributes to pollution to safeguard the planet

Storyboard - How it works?



01. Scan

The user scans their current location using our app.


02. Dark Data Visualization

Our app service visualizes the user’s dark data as trash, allowing users to recognize the amount visually.

The more dark data the user has, the worse their 'Earth' becomes, to the extent that living species can't survive there


03. Delete

When the user touches and deletes the dark data, our system simultaneously deletes the dark data.


04. Better Earth

By cleaning and deleting dark data, the user’s location, which represents Earth, becomes cleaner, thus allowing animals to return to the planet.

Our system visualizes different types of dark data based on their characteristics.



The more the user cleans their 'Earth', the more endangered species are able to inhabit it.

These species cannot survive in a polluted environment.

users can view collected animals and detailed information about each species.

This encourages personal attention towards endangered species and prompts users to consider sustainability concerns through our system.

Users can see how much dark data they have deleted and how much remains.

AR Working Prototype




01. The user scans the location, and the system visualizes the dark data based on its file type.

02. Dark data is visualized in the user’s space, displaying its name and file type.
 03. If the user deletes the dark data files, making their 'Earth' cleaner, they can attract animals that can only thrive in clean environments.
